What Is Metaphysics? The word metaphysical has become a synonym for the modern, organized movement. It was first used by Aristotle. Considered by some to have been his greatest writing, his 13th volume was simply entitled Metaphysics. The dictionary definition is: ”Beyond natural science; the science of pure being. ” Meta – means ‘above, or beyond.’ Metaphysics, then, means ‘above and beyond physics’ – ‘above or beyond the physical,’ the world of form. ‘Meta’ is above that; it is the spirit of the mind, which is behind all things. The confusing thing about the word metaphysics is that it has been used to cover any one or a combination of the following subjects: Philosophy, Religion, Parapsychology, Mysticism, Yoga, ESP, Dreams, Jungian Psychology, Astrology, Meditation, Self-Help Studies, Positive Thinking, Life after Death, Reincarnation, etc. This wide range of subjects that can fall under metaphysics all have a common denominator, which is that they deal with the branch of philosophy that examines the true nature of, and understanding of reality, whether visible or invisible. Metaphysics includes the relationship between mind and matter, substance and attribute, and, fact and value. Basically, metaphysics is the philosophical study of being and knowing. It is very closely related to spirituality, but it is not a religion. We must believe and accept that whatever we imagine and feel to be true will come to pass; whatever we desire for another, we are wishing for ourselves. Emerson wrote: “We become what we think about all day long.” In other words and most simply stated: Spirit, thought, mind, and meta is the expression of creative presence and power – and as in nature (physical laws), any force can be used two ways. For example, water can clean us or drown us; electricity can make life easier or more deadly. It is fair to say then that our thoughts create our reality, both positive and negative, and when we comprehend this fundamental principle and presence, and learn and accept a new thought or an entire concept. Metaphysics, then, is the study of causation – concerned not with the effect that is now manifest, but rather with that which is causing the result. This discipline approaches spiritual ideas as scientists approach the world of form, just as they investigate the mind or causation from which the visible is formed, or derived. If a mind is changed, or a cause is changed, the effect is changed. The strength and beauty of metaphysics is that it is not confined to any one particular creed, but is universal. One can be a Jew, Christian, Muslim, or Buddhist and yet still be a metaphysician. This also applies to scientists, poets and philosophers alike. Metaphysics encourages ‘oneness’ and ‘unity of humankind’….Unity Consciousness; ending the sense of separation and feeling of alienation, enabling us to discover our true essence and the power within. When we become conscious of our divinity (the God within us) and bring this into our every day life (our human experience), we feel fulfillment and joy in everything we do, taking humankind to a higher level of consciousness and way of Being. “When we want to see a change, first we have to BE the change.” |
